One certificate does not make a first aid trainer, and the gap between "qualified" and "approved to certificate your staff" is where most confusion lives.

In Short

  • A Level 3 Award in Education and Training is the accepted teaching baseline for first aid trainers.
  • You cannot teach above your own level, so trainers hold a current first aid certificate themselves.
  • An assessor qualification matters because first aid is assessed practically, not on paper.
  • Accreditation approval, not the qualification alone, is what makes the certificate you issue valid.
  • FAIB accredits our first aid courses and FAA accredits our mental health courses, and the two are not interchangeable.

Aim2Aid Ltd keeps every trainer in-house, led by owner Rebecca Sullivan, with over 50 years of combined experience behind the team. Whether you need first aid courses and training or first aid training services Milton Keynes, we cover the whole area.

What qualifications do I need to train first aid?

To train first aid you need a recognised trainer qualification, usually a Level 3 Award in Education and Training, plus a current first aid qualification at the level you intend to teach and evidence of ongoing occupational competence. Most trainers add an assessor qualification and work under an accrediting body's approval.

Ring Aim2Aid First Aid and Fire Safety Training on 07771 680794 and we will confirm exactly which accreditation and trainer qualifications sit behind the course you book for your workplace.

The three parts of a first aid trainer's qualification set

People asking this question usually expect one certificate to exist. It does not. The qualification set has three separate parts, and missing any one of them stops you delivering a certificated course.

  • A teaching qualification. The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is the accepted baseline. It proves you can plan a session, deliver it and manage a group, which is a different skill from knowing what to do at a casualty's side.
  • A current first aid qualification. You cannot teach above your own level. A trainer delivering First Aid at Work holds a current First Aid at Work certificate themselves, and the same logic applies to paediatric and mental health content.
  • Occupational competence and CPD. Accrediting bodies want evidence you keep your own clinical knowledge current, in line with resuscitation guidance, and that you actually use it.

An assessor qualification, commonly the Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment, sits alongside these because first aid courses are assessed practically, not by a written paper alone. Whether you need first aid courses and training or a first aid course in Reading, the trainer standing in front of your staff should hold all of this, and you are entitled to ask.

Accreditation is what turns a qualified trainer into a valid certificate

Here is the part that catches people out. Holding the qualifications above does not, on its own, mean the certificates you issue are worth anything. The course itself has to sit under an accrediting body, and the trainer has to be approved to deliver it.

Aim2Aid Ltd runs its first aid courses under FAIB accreditation, and its mental health courses under FAA. Those are two different bodies for two different course families, and they are not interchangeable. A trainer approved for one is not automatically approved for the other.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sets out that employers are responsible for satisfying themselves their chosen training provider is competent, which is why documentation matters more than a friendly conversation. Whether you need first aid courses and training or first aid training in Windsor, ask which body accredits the specific course you are booking, not the company in general.

Why we train our own trainers instead of buying them in

Every trainer who delivers an Aim2Aid course is in-house. None of it is outsourced to a freelance pool booked the week before. Rebecca Sullivan owns the business and leads the training team, which means the qualification checks, the CPD and the standard of delivery are hers to answer for rather than a subcontractor's.

Between them our trainers hold over 50 years of combined experience. That matters when a delegate asks the awkward question that is not in the slide pack, or when a group needs the scenario adapted to a warehouse floor rather than an office. Training happens at your premises, with your layout, your risks and your people.

We do not run open courses for individual delegates. If you are looking for a trainer qualification for yourself, that is a different path from the one we deliver. What we deliver is workplace certification for your staff, on your site.

What the qualification standard means for the course your staff sit

The reason any of this matters to a business owner is compliance. An inspector or an insurer looking at your first aid provision will look at the certificate, the accrediting body and the trainer's standing behind it. A cheap certificate from an unapproved source is a gap in your paperwork, not a saving.

Emergency First Aid at Work runs as one day, about six hours, for up to 12 delegates, and the certificate is valid for three years. Blended delivery is available as an option: the theory is completed online in advance and the practical assessment is done at your venue, with the same duration, the same delegate cap and the same three-year certificate. Compliance is identical either way, which is the whole point of accreditation.

Our Emergency First Aid at Work course includes paediatric content at no extra cost. If your workplace has children on site occasionally, a nursery run, a family business, a leisure setting, that cover is already in the day rather than being a second booking.

We work across Berkshire and surrounding areas, delivering at your premises. Aim2Aid Ltd is registered under company number 16319053 if you want to check us before you pick up the phone, and the reviews widget on the site carries feedback from businesses we have trained.
