What it covers

What it covers

A distinct discipline from physical first aid — focused on recognising, supporting and signposting.

Recognising the signs of common mental health conditions
Starting a supportive conversation
Non-judgemental listening
Signposting to professional support
Understanding stigma and reducing it
Supporting a colleague in crisis
Self-care for the mental health first aider
Building a wellbeing-aware workplace

The length and depth are shaped to your organisation, from a half-day awareness session to the two-day mental health first aider course. Wondering how mental health cover fits alongside physical first aiders? We can help you think through the right mix for your team.

The honest answer

Are mental health first aiders a legal requirement?

No — mental health first aiders are recommended, not legally mandated. We think it is important to be straight about that. What the law does require is that employers manage the risks to health, including mental health, and meet their duty of care to staff. Trained mental health first aiders are one of the most effective, widely recommended ways to do that.

So this is not about ticking a legal box. It is about giving real people the skills to notice when a colleague is struggling and respond well — which is good for your team and good for your organisation.

FAQ

Mental health first aid, answered

Are Mental Health First Aiders a legal requirement?
No — they are recommended, not legally mandated. Employers do have a legal duty to manage risks to health, including mental health, and trained mental health first aiders are one of the most effective and widely recommended ways to meet that duty.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
It is training that helps people recognise the signs of mental health difficulties, start a supportive conversation, listen without judgement and signpost the right professional help — the mental health equivalent of physical first aid.
What does Mental Health First Aid involve?
Recognising common conditions, holding a supportive conversation, non-judgemental listening, signposting to support, reducing stigma and looking after your own wellbeing as a first aider. It does not involve diagnosing or treating.
How do you help someone who doesn't want help?
You cannot force support on anyone, and the course is honest about that. It focuses on staying alongside the person, keeping the door open, listening without pressure and gently signposting professional help for when they are ready. In an immediate crisis, emergency services are always the right call.
Do you deliver mental health first aid onsite?
Yes. Running it somewhere your people already know tends to make open conversation easier, and we fit the length of the course to the time you can release staff.
