Emergency first aid at work

What is covered in emergency first aid at work?

Emergency first aid at work covers the skills a workplace first aider needs in the first few minutes of an incident: assessing a scene safely, managing an unresponsive casualty, CPR and defibrillator use, choking, serious bleeding, shock, seizures, minor injuries and burns, plus the paperwork and reporting a business is expected to keep.

The core life-saving skills on the course

The bulk of the day is spent on the things that decide an outcome before an ambulance arrives. Delegates practise a primary survey, learn how to open an airway, check breathing and place a casualty in the recovery position, then move on to chest compressions and rescue breaths on manikins until the rhythm is second nature. Defibrillator use sits alongside CPR, because the two go together in a real cardiac arrest.

Choking is taught for a conscious and an unconscious casualty. Catastrophic and serious bleeding is covered with direct pressure and dressings, along with recognising and treating shock. Seizures, unresponsive casualties who are breathing, and casualties who need constant monitoring all get hands-on time rather than a slide.

Whether you need emergency first aid at work or emergency first aid at work in Reading, we cover the whole area, and the practical content is identical wherever your staff are based.

Everything is practised, not just described. Rebecca's view is simple: a delegate who has knelt on the floor and done thirty compressions properly will do it again under pressure. Someone who has only watched it will hesitate.

Emergency first aid at work

The injuries and illnesses covered beyond CPR

A full day gives room for the everyday incidents that make up most workplace accident books. Delegates work through:

  • Minor injuries: cuts, grazes, splinters and small wounds, and when a minor injury is not minor
  • Burns and scalds, including cooling times and what never to put on a burn
  • Sprains, strains and suspected fractures, and how to keep a casualty still and comfortable
  • Head injuries and when a casualty needs to go to hospital regardless of how they feel
  • Fainting, shock and casualties who deteriorate while you are with them
  • Eye injuries and foreign objects, common in workshops, kitchens and warehouses

Whether you need emergency first aid at work or emergency first aid at work services Windsor, we cover the whole area, and the content is adapted to the risks your staff actually meet. A busy kitchen, a distribution unit and an office each get different worked examples, because a course that only talks in general terms does not stick.

Our trainers bring over 50 years of combined experience between them, and they use it. If you are looking for first aid training close to home for your workplace in Berkshire and surrounding areas, the session comes to your premises rather than your team losing a day to travel.

Emergency first aid at work

A first aider is not only a pair of hands. The course covers the role and responsibilities of the workplace first aider, how to keep yourself safe before you touch a casualty, infection control and use of gloves and face shields, and how to summon help clearly so the emergency services get what they need first time. Delegates also learn what goes in an accident record and why an incomplete entry causes problems later.

The contents of a first aid kit, how often it should be checked and who is responsible for restocking it are covered too. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sets out that employers must provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and people, and this course is built to sit inside that duty rather than alongside it.

Our emergency first aid at work training is accredited by FAIB, and the certificate is valid for three years. Mental health training is a separate strand accredited by the FAA, so a business looking at both knows exactly which body sits behind which certificate.

How the day runs and who it suits

The course is one day, around six hours, for up to 12 delegates, and it leads to a three-year certificate. That group size is deliberate. Twelve is the point at which everyone still gets proper time on a manikin and a defibrillator trainer with a trainer watching them.

Blended delivery is available as an option: the theory is completed online in advance and the practical assessment is done at your premises. The duration, the delegate cap and the three-year certificate stay exactly the same, so compliance is unaffected and your staff spend less time off the floor on the day.

EFAW suits lower-risk workplaces, or businesses that want a wider spread of trained staff alongside a smaller number holding the three-day qualification. Offices, shops, salons, small manufacturing units and community organisations all fit here. Where a course includes paediatric content at no extra cost, that matters to nurseries, clubs and any workplace with children on site.

Every trainer is in-house, employed and led by Rebecca Sullivan, and never outsourced to a freelance pool. That means the person standing in front of your staff knows what was agreed when you booked, and the same standard applies to every session we run. You can see what other businesses have said about their training on our reviews page.
