Fire Safety and Warden Training

What Fire Marshal Training Covers

Most fire warden training fails on one point: it teaches theory and never touches the building the delegates actually work in. That is the awkward part of this job. A generic slide deck does not tell your staff which stairwell fills with smoke first, or who sweeps the back office on Oxford Road. So we train at your premises, using your layout, your alarm and your assembly point.

The course gives nominated staff the knowledge and the confidence to act as a fire marshal or fire warden. It is role-based, not awareness-only. Delegates leave knowing what they are expected to do in the first two minutes.

  • Legal duties of a fire warden under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
  • How fire behaves, how it spreads and why smoke kills before flame
  • Raising the alarm, calling the fire service and controlling a sweep
  • Evacuation procedures, roll call and refuge points
  • Assisting people who cannot use stairs unaided
  • Reporting, record keeping and post-incident debrief

Aim2Aid Ltd is a registered company, number 16319053, run by Rebecca Sullivan from Windsor. Trainers are in-house. We never outsource a session to a subcontractor, and between them our trainers hold over 50 years of combined experience. Rebecca leads that team and sets the standard for every course, though she does not deliver every session herself.

Fire Risk Assessment and Evacuation Procedures for Reading Homes

Evacuation plans go stale. Layouts change, people leave, a store room becomes a server room, and nobody updates the sweep list. That is the failure we find most often.

Reading makes this harder than average. The borough's local plan records 15 conservation areas, two scheduled ancient monuments and five historic parks and gardens, and the older housing stock sits thick around Castle Street, Castle Hill, Coley Hill, Russell Street, Baker Street and Oxford Road. Georgian villas and Victorian terraces converted into flats, offices and multi-occupancy use rarely have modern escape geometry. Narrow stair cores. Single routes out. Rooms opening onto rooms.

So the practical work is grounded in the building we are standing in. Delegates walk the escape routes, time a sweep, identify the pinch points and write down what they find. Your fire risk assessment stops being a document and starts being a set of instructions people can follow under pressure. Where a conservation area limits what you can alter externally, the procedure has to carry more of the load, and your wardens need to know that.

Workplace Fire Safety Knowledge for Reading Homes

Here is the objection we hear before anything else: training day means noise, disruption and a room lost for the duration. Fair concern. So we stage it around you.

We come to you. There is no kit to install, no drilling, no mess and no residue. A meeting room, a canteen or a cleared floor space is enough, and the room goes back to normal the moment we pack up. Practical extinguisher work happens outside in a controlled space, so your working areas stay usable. If a full day out of the diary is the problem, blended delivery splits it: theory completed online in advance at each delegate's own pace, practical assessment done at your premises in a shorter on-site block. Same certificate. Same standard.

Our fire safety training services are built for workplaces rather than classrooms, which is why the content flexes to sector. Offices, shops, care settings, warehouses and schools all evacuate differently. Whether you need fire safety and warden training in Reading or fire warden training services Windsor, we cover the whole area and the sites in between.

Staff who understand the building behave differently in an alarm. They stop drifting. They move.

Online Course Format and Certification

Online-only fire training has a weakness worth naming: it cannot assess whether someone can hold an extinguisher correctly or clear a floor. We use the online element for what it is good at, which is theory, legislation and self-paced study before the practical.

Certification runs for three years and is recognised by the HSE, Ofsted and the DfE. First aid courses are accredited by FAIB; our mental health courses are accredited by FAA. We keep those separate because they are separate, and we do not stretch one badge across everything we teach.

You get a delegate list, certificates and a record you can put in front of an inspector or an insurer. HSE guidance on first aid at work sets out that training must be appropriate to the workplace and its risks, and the same logic applies to your fire arrangements: what you train should match the premises you occupy. Paperwork that matches reality survives scrutiny.

Fire Safety and Warden Training

Who the Course Is For

Fire warden duty often lands on whoever happened to be in the room. That is how businesses end up with a nominated warden who has never read the evacuation plan.

This course is for the people who will actually do the job: appointed fire marshals and fire wardens, managers with premises responsibility, facilities and site staff, receptionists who control the panel, and anyone named in your emergency plan. Group sizes are kept workable so everyone handles equipment rather than watching. Whether you need fire safety and warden training in Reading or first aid training services Reading, we cover the whole area and the surrounding areas of Berkshire.

One note worth knowing: our Emergency First Aid at Work course includes paediatric content at no extra cost. That course runs one day, about six hours, for up to 12 delegates, with a three-year certificate, and can also be delivered blended with the theory online. Life-threatening bleed control is now trained on every course we run.

Fire Extinguishers and Emergency Response

Extinguishers are the part people get wrong. Wrong class on the wrong fire makes things worse, and most staff have never operated one. Reading it in a booklet is not the same as feeling the weight of it.

Delegates handle extinguishers, learn the classes and, more importantly, learn when not to fight a fire at all. The honest answer in most workplaces is evacuate, not intervene. We teach the decision, not just the technique.

  • Water, foam, CO2, dry powder and wet chemical: what each is for
  • Fire blankets and safe use on cooking fires
  • PASS technique and safe distance
  • When to leave it, close the door and get out
  • Handover to the attending fire service

Fire Safety and Warden Training in Reading FAQs

How long is fire warden training?

It is a short course delivered in a single block at your premises, with the practical extinguisher and evacuation work included. If a full session out of the working day is difficult, we can split it: theory online in advance, practical on site. Call us with your numbers and we will confirm the schedule for your site rather than quote a generic figure.

Is it a legal requirement to have fire warden training?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person must make sure enough competent people are appointed to carry out the emergency arrangements. In practice that means trained fire wardens. The duty is on you to show competence, and a training record is how you show it.

Do you train in older Reading buildings and conservation areas?

Yes. Reading Borough Council lists conservation areas including Castle Hill, Russell Street, Oxford Road, St Mary's Butts, Castle Street, Christchurch, Kendrick, Redlands and South Park. Where external alterations are controlled, your evacuation procedure carries more of the load, so we train wardens on the escape routes you actually have.

Will training disrupt our Reading premises?

No installation, no drilling and no mess. We need a meeting room or cleared floor space, and extinguisher practical work happens outside in a controlled area. The room returns to normal use as soon as we pack up.

Which parts of Reading and Berkshire do you cover?

We train employers across Reading and Berkshire and surrounding areas, from town centre offices around Market Place and Oxford Road to schools, shops and industrial units on the edge of the borough. Training is delivered at your premises only.
