Emergency First Aid at Work

Course Overview

Emergency First Aid at Work in Guildford is a one day course, about six hours of contact time, for up to 12 delegates, delivered at your own premises and leading to a three-year certificate. The syllabus is accredited by FAIB and the certification is recognised by HSE, Ofsted and the DfE, so a nominated first aider trained on this course satisfies the appointed-person and first-aider needs of a lower-risk workplace.

The day is built around the emergencies that actually occur on a working site: an unresponsive casualty, a blocked airway, a catastrophic bleed, shock, burns and scalds, and minor injuries that still need recording. Practical work runs on adult manikins with CPR feedback, a training AED with pads and a trainer-managed shock sequence, and bandaging and dressing stock that delegates handle themselves rather than watch. Life-threatening bleed control, including wound packing and tourniquet use, is now trained on every course we run.

Every trainer is in-house. We do not outsource sessions to freelance associates, so the person standing in your staff room has been briefed on your risk profile before they arrive. Rebecca leads the training team and holds the standard the group teaches to, with over 50 years of combined experience behind that team.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Assessment and Certification in Guildford

Assessment is continuous and practical, not a written exam sat cold at the end of the day. The trainer observes each delegate performing the core skills to the FAIB criteria and signs off competence skill by skill, so nobody leaves uncertain about what they passed.

The sequence runs in this order:

  • Primary survey demonstrated on a manikin: danger, response, airway, breathing, with a shout for help and a 999 or 112 handover including the site address.
  • Two minutes of unbroken CPR at 30 compressions to 2 rescue breaths, compression depth of 5 to 6 cm at 100 to 120 per minute, checked against the manikin feedback.
  • AED deployment: pad placement, clearing the casualty, delivering the shock and resuming compressions inside the device prompt window.
  • Recovery position and airway maintenance on an unconscious breathing casualty.
  • Choking sequence: back blows then abdominal thrusts.
  • Catastrophic bleed: direct pressure, wound packing and correct tourniquet application above the wound.
  • Verbal questioning on shock, burns, seizures, anaphylaxis and accident recording.

Certificates are issued on successful completion and are valid for three years from the course date, valid across the UK. HSE guidance recommends annual refresher practice inside that three-year window, and we run short refresher sessions for teams that want it. If a delegate does not meet a criterion on the day, the trainer re-coaches and re-assesses the skill before the session closes; nobody is sent away and charged again for the same content.

What You Will Learn in Guildford

The content is fixed by the qualification, but the scenarios are set against your own workplace so the skills transfer straight back to the floor.

Life support and defibrillation

Delegates cover the primary survey, adult CPR at the ratios above, the recovery position, agonal breathing recognition, and full AED use including pad placement on a hairy or wet chest, cardiac pacemakers and the clear-and-shock command. If your building already holds a defibrillator, bring the cabinet key and we will drill on your own unit alongside the training model.

Bleeding, wounds and shock

Direct and indirect pressure, dressings and haemostatic-style wound packing, tourniquet placement and time-marking, embedded objects, nosebleeds, amputation care and recognition of hypovolaemic shock by pulse, skin and conscious level.

Airway, medical emergencies and reporting

Choking in adults and children, asthma, seizures, anaphylaxis and adrenaline auto-injector awareness, diabetic emergencies, burns and scalds cooled for the full 20 minutes, minor injuries, and the accident book and RIDDOR-relevant reporting that follows an incident.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Who the Course Is For

This is the right qualification for a lower-risk workplace: an office floor, a retail unit, a salon, a warehouse mezzanine with light picking, a care setting's admin wing, a nursery, a village hall committee or a small manufacturing unit where the higher-hazard work is contained.

The training happens where you work, and that shapes the day. In a converted Guildford townhouse office split over three floors, the practical work runs in the largest meeting room and the scenario work uses your real stairwell, because a casualty on a half-landing is a genuinely different problem from a casualty on carpet. In a trade unit off an industrial estate, we work in the mess room and walk the shop floor to place your AED and first aid kit against actual travel distances. In a school or nursery, we use a hall or a cleared classroom and time the run from the furthest point to the kit. If your site is a shop with a stockroom, a gym, a church, a dental practice or a hotel back-of-house, the same pattern applies: a clear floor space of roughly 4 m by 4 m, chairs for the theory, and a wall socket.

Two practical points that matter for fit. Emergency First Aid at Work is added at no extra cost to every paediatric first aid course we run, which suits nurseries, schools, sports clubs and any workplace where children are on site. And if the correct level for your risk assessment turns out to be the three-day qualification instead, we will say so before you book rather than after.

Course Format and Duration

One day, approximately six hours of contact time, maximum 12 delegates, delivered at your premises anywhere in Guildford and across Surrey and surrounding areas. Twelve is a ceiling, not a target: with 12 delegates we bring enough manikins and training defibrillators that hands-on time per person stays useful.

Blended delivery is available as an option on this course. The theory is completed online by each delegate in their own time, then the practical session, assessment and sign-off happen at your venue on the same day, still six hours of course time in total, still up to 12 delegates, still a three-year certificate with the same FAIB accreditation and the same HSE, Ofsted and DfE recognition. Teams on shift patterns tend to prefer it because the classroom block shortens without touching the practical hours.

Our emergency first aid at work services follow the same structure across every booking, so a team trained in one of your sites can be assessed to the identical criteria at another. If you are searching for EFAW training close to home in Guildford, our trainers cover the town and the surrounding Surrey towns directly. Whether you need emergency first aid at work in Guildford or a first aid course in Guildford at a different level, we cover the whole area from one team.

What we need from you on the day: a room, a floor space, and delegates in clothing they can kneel in. What we bring: manikins with disposable airways, training AEDs, consumables, casualty simulation kit, all paperwork and the certificates.

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 every employer must provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and people. Adequate is decided by your own first aid needs assessment, which weighs the hazards on site, headcount, shift patterns, lone working, distance from emergency services and the age profile of the people present. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sets out that assessment approach in its first aid guidance.

For most lower-risk workplaces the needs assessment lands on one or more EFAW-trained first aiders, with the number scaled to headcount and spread across shifts so cover never drops to zero. The steps are straightforward: complete the needs assessment, decide how many first aiders each shift needs, train them, record the certificates with their expiry dates, and diarise the retraining before the three years elapse.

Certificates from this course are accepted by employers and insurers because the accreditation and the assessment criteria are documented and auditable. We can provide the qualification details, accreditation reference and trainer credentials for your health and safety file or your insurer's questionnaire. Aim2Aid Ltd is a registered company, number 16319053, if your procurement process needs it.

Booking Options and Course Dates

Dates are arranged around your operation rather than a published timetable, because all training is delivered at your premises. Weekday, weekend and split-team dates are all workable, and we do not run open courses for individual delegates.

Booking runs like this: call or email with your site postcode, delegate numbers, whether anyone also needs paediatric first aid and whether you prefer classroom or blended theory. We confirm a date, send the joining details and the pre-course paperwork, deliver and assess on the day, and issue certificates on completion. Quotes are free and are given as a fixed figure for the group, not per head guesswork.

Rebecca or a member of the in-house team will talk through your needs assessment first if you are unsure which level you need. You can read what other Surrey employers have said about the training on our reviews and Trustpilot widget.
