- CPR, defibrillator use, choking, severe bleeding, shock and burns are practised hands on.
- The fuller qualification adds fractures, spinal and head injuries, anaphylaxis, seizures, diabetes and stroke.
- Record keeping, kit contents and handover to the emergency services are part of the course.

## What is covered in first aid at work?

First aid at work covers the syllabus a workplace first aider needs: the role and responsibilities of a first aider, assessing an incident, unresponsive casualties, CPR and defibrillator use, choking, bleeding, shock, burns, fractures, head and spinal injuries, seizures, asthma, allergic reactions and workplace record keeping.

## The core life-saving skills every first aider practises

The heart of the course is the handful of things that decide whether someone survives the next ten minutes. Delegates practise the primary survey, opening an airway, checking breathing, placing an unresponsive but breathing casualty in the recovery position, and delivering chest compressions and rescue breaths on a manikin until the technique is right rather than roughly right.

Defibrillator use sits alongside CPR, because a pad placed confidently in the first minutes matters far more than theory. Choking, severe bleeding, catastrophic wounds, shock and burns are all worked through hands on, with real bandages and real time pressure rather than a slide.

Whether you need first aid at work or [first aid at work services Reading](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/first-aid-at-work-reading/), we cover the whole area, so your staff practise the same skills to the same standard in Berkshire and surrounding areas.

Because Rebecca keeps every trainer in-house rather than outsourcing to a freelance pool, the practical sessions run the way she teaches them, with over 50 years of combined experience behind the group.

## The injury and illness topics that make up the rest of the syllabus

Beyond the immediate life-savers, the course works through what actually turns up in a working week. Fractures, dislocations and sprains. Head injuries and suspected spinal injuries. Chest injuries and crush injuries. Eye injuries, poisoning and the effects of extremes of heat and cold. Anaphylaxis, asthma attacks, seizures, diabetic emergencies, stroke and suspected heart attack.

Then there is the part people forget: the paperwork and the plumbing of a first aid system. Accident recording, reporting duties, the contents and upkeep of your first aid kit, hygiene and infection control, and knowing when to hand over to the emergency services and what to tell them.

Whether you need first aid at work or [first aid at work services Windsor](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/first-aid-at-work-windsor/), we cover the whole area, and the syllabus does not shrink depending on where your premises sit.

- **Responsibilities:** the first aider's role, personal safety, consent and handover.
- **Unresponsive casualties:** recovery position, CPR, defibrillator, choking.
- **Bleeding and shock:** wound care, dressings, amputation, internal bleeding signs.
- **Injuries:** bones, joints, head, spine, chest, burns, eyes.
- **Medical conditions:** anaphylaxis, asthma, seizures, diabetes, stroke, cardiac.

## How the covered content maps onto FAW and EFAW

The syllabus is the same family of skills at two depths. Emergency [First Aid at Work](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/first-aid-training/first-aid-at-work/), or EFAW, is the one day version, about six hours, up to 12 delegates, with a three year certificate. It covers the emergency content: the first aider's role, unresponsive casualties, CPR and defibrillator use, choking, bleeding, shock, minor injuries and seizures.

The fuller **first aid at work** qualification runs longer and adds the wider injury and illness list, from fractures and spinal injuries to anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies and stroke recognition. Which one your workplace needs comes down to your first aid needs assessment, which the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expects every employer to carry out.

All of the first aid courses are accredited by FAIB. The mental health courses are separate and accredited by FAA, so if you are looking at workplace wellbeing as well as physical first aid, that is a different qualification rather than a bolt-on to this one.

## Delivery, delegate numbers and what your certificate confirms

Training happens at your premises. That means the scenarios use your stairwell, your kitchen, your loading bay and your kit, so what the group practises is what they will actually face. Practical sessions run with up to 12 delegates so nobody sits at the back watching.

Blended delivery is available as an option: the theory is completed online in your own time and the practical assessment is done at your workplace, keeping the same duration and compliance for the course and the same three year certificate for EFAW.

One thing worth knowing for anyone with children on site or in the family of the business: paediatric content is included with EFAW at no extra cost, so the covered material stretches to infants and children without a separate booking.

At the end, delegates hold a certificate valid for three years, and Rebecca Sullivan's team will tell you plainly which qualification suits the risks in your building rather than selling you the longest option on the list.
