Schools do not get a fixed number of first aiders handed to them in law, they get a duty to work out what is adequate and then prove it.

**At a Glance**

- A written first aid needs assessment is the legal starting point for every school.
- Cover must hold across lessons, breaks, trips, clubs and after-school activities.
- Requirements split into trained people, stocked equipment and clear records.
- Emergency first aid at work is the usual foundation for school staff.
- Certificates last three years, so renewal needs planning around the school year.
- Training delivered on your own site means staff practise where they would respond.

## What are the first aid requirements in schools?

Every school must carry out a first aid needs assessment and then provide enough trained first aiders, suitable equipment and written arrangements to match the risks on site. There is no single fixed headcount in law, but the cover has to be adequate for pupils, staff and visitors, during lessons, breaks, trips and after-school activities.

## The needs assessment sets the number of first aiders, not a rule of thumb

The starting point is an honest look at the site. A small infant school on one level is a different job to a secondary with workshops, science labs, a sports hall and a swimming pool. The [Health and Safety Executive](https://www.hse.gov.uk/simple-health-safety/firstaid/first-aid-training.htm) (HSE) expects the assessment to weigh up the hazards, the number of people on site, the spread of buildings, shift and rota patterns, lone working and how long an ambulance would realistically take to arrive.

In practice that means asking who is trained on a Monday morning when two staff are off sick, who covers the far end of the field at lunchtime, and who is on the minibus. A number that looks fine on the policy document falls apart the first time it is tested. We have seen schools with plenty of certificates on the wall and nobody trained on the early shift.

Whether you need emergency first aid for schools or [emergency first aid for schools services Reading](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/emergency-first-aid-for-schools-reading/), we cover the whole area, and the conversation always starts with the assessment rather than a course booking.

- Count trained staff by session, not by school year.
- Include trips, clubs, breakfast provision and lettings.
- Record the reasoning, not only the conclusion.
- Review it whenever the buildings, staffing or activities change.

## Trained staff, equipment and records are the three things an inspector looks at

Requirements land in three practical places. First, people: named first aiders with in-date certificates, and appointed persons where the assessment supports it. Second, kit: stocked first aid containers in the right places, checked and restocked, plus a defibrillator if one is on site and staff who are confident using it. Third, paperwork: a first aid policy, accident records and a clear route for reporting reportable injuries.

Emergency first aid at work training is the usual foundation for school staff, and it covers the incidents that actually happen in a school corridor: unresponsive casualties, choking, bleeding, shock, seizures, burns and head injuries. Where staff work with the youngest pupils or with an early years setting on site, paediatric content matters, and we include the paediatric element in our emergency first aid course at no extra cost.

Whether you need emergency first aid for schools or [emergency first aid for schools in Windsor](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/emergency-first-aid-for-schools-windsor/), we cover the whole area, and the same standard of training turns up either way.

## Certificates run for three years and cover has to hold in between

A first aid certificate is valid for three years, and the clock is unforgiving. Schools that leave requalification until the summer term often find every date squeezed by exams and INSET. The safer habit is a simple renewal calendar built around the school year, with a small margin so a single absence does not leave a gap in cover.

Our emergency first aid course runs as one day, about six hours, for up to 12 delegates, and issues a three-year certificate. It is delivered at your own premises, so staff are not travelling and the training happens in the rooms where they would actually respond. Blended delivery is available as an option too: the theory is completed online in advance and the practical assessment is done at your school, with the same duration, the same delegate cap and the same three-year certificate.

For a fuller picture of what is covered, our [emergency first aid for schools services](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/first-aid-training/emergency-first-aid-for-schools/) page sets out the content and the delivery options side by side.

- One day, about six hours, up to 12 delegates.
- Three-year certificate on successful completion.
- Blended option: online theory plus practical at your school.

## How we deliver school first aid training across the county

Aim2Aid Ltd is run by Rebecca Sullivan, and every trainer on the team is in-house. Nothing is outsourced to a third party, which is why the standard holds from one visit to the next. Rebecca leads the team, and between them the trainers bring over 50 years of combined experience into the room, much of it from real incidents rather than textbooks. Our first aid courses are accredited by FAIB, and our mental health courses are accredited by FAA.

If you are looking for school first aid training near you in Berkshire and surrounding areas, we can usually work around your INSET days and staff meeting slots rather than the other way round. Training is delivered at your premises, with your own layout, your own kit and your own staff, which is the point: the practice matches the place.

Sessions are pitched at the people in the room. Teaching assistants, site staff, office staff and senior leaders all leave with the same core skills but a clear sense of their own part in the response. That is what makes a school policy work on the day it is needed, for your staff and for your whole workplace.
