Being the workplace first aider does not automatically come with extra money, and knowing what is owed and what is optional saves a lot of awkward conversations.

**The Short Version**

- There is no legal right to extra pay for holding a first aid certificate at work.
- Your employer must pay for the course and pay you for the time spent training.
- Any first aider allowance comes from your contract, a staff policy or a negotiated agreement.
- Requalification time is working time and is paid at your normal rate.
- Emergency First Aid at Work runs one day, about six hours, up to 12 delegates, 3-year certificate.
- Blended delivery puts the theory online and the practical at your own premises.

Aim2Aid Ltd is run by Rebecca Sullivan with in-house trainers who are never outsourced, and our first aid courses are accredited by FAIB. Whether you need first aid at work or [first aid at work services Milton Keynes](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/first-aid-at-work-milton-keynes/), we cover the whole area.

## Do you get paid for being a first aider at work?

You get paid for the working time you spend as a first aider, including training your employer sends you on, but there is no legal right to extra money on top of your normal wage. Any first aider allowance or bonus is entirely down to what your employer chooses to offer.

## The law covers the training, not a bonus

The duty sits with the employer, not the volunteer. An employer has to work out how much first aid cover the workplace needs, appoint enough people, and pay for the course and the time spent on it. That is the part with rules behind it, as [Health and Safety Executive](https://www.hse.gov.uk/firstaid/) guidance on first aid at work sets out. What there is not is a rule saying an appointed first aider must be handed a separate payment for holding the certificate.

So the honest answer for most trades and most sites is this: your hours are paid as normal, the course is paid for by the business, and anything extra is a company decision. Whether you need first aid at work or [first aid at work in Reading](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/first-aid-at-work-reading/), we cover the whole area, and the pattern we see on site is consistent across small firms and large ones.

## Where an allowance usually comes from

An allowance is a contractual or policy matter. It tends to appear in three places:

- A line in your contract or staff handbook setting a monthly or annual first aider payment.
- A collective agreement negotiated by a union or staff forum.
- A discretionary uplift the employer offers because it struggles to get enough volunteers.

If none of those apply, no payment is owed. That is worth knowing before you agree to take the role on, and it is worth raising with whoever holds the health and safety file. Employers who want willing first aiders rather than reluctant ones often find a modest allowance solves the problem quickly. Whether you need first aid at work or [first aid at work in Windsor](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/first-aid-at-work-windsor/), we cover the whole area, and we speak to managers wrestling with exactly this question most weeks.

## Training time is working time, and it should be paid

If your employer asks you to qualify, the course runs in work hours and is paid at your normal rate. The same goes for the requalification when the certificate runs out. Our [first aid at work](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/first-aid-training/first-aid-at-work/) courses are run at your own premises by our in-house trainers, never outsourced, with Rebecca Sullivan leading the team and more than 50 years of combined experience behind them. Our first aid courses are accredited by FAIB.

Blended delivery is available as an option where it suits the shift pattern for your staff: the theory is completed online in advance and the practical assessment is done at your workplace, which keeps people on the floor for longer. Emergency First Aid at Work, for example, runs as one day of about six hours for up to 12 delegates and carries a 3-year certificate.

## What being the named first aider actually asks of you

Payment aside, be clear about the job. You are not on call around the clock and you are not expected to act as a paramedic. You keep the kit checked, you know where the nearest defibrillator sits, you respond during your shift, and you fill in the accident book afterwards. Nothing more heroic than that.

Being properly trained is what makes the role sit lightly. People who freeze are usually people who were handed a certificate years ago and never touched a manikin since. A refresher every three years, run for your business on your own site with your own layout and hazards in front of you, is what turns the title into something you can carry without worrying about it.

We cover Berkshire and surrounding areas, and we are happy to talk through the right level of cover for your workplace before anything is booked.
