Every school needs trained first aiders, and the minimum for staff is almost never enough for a site full of children.

**In Short**

- Schools are workplaces, so first aid provision is a legal requirement, sized by a needs assessment.
- Staff cover alone will not do, because a school's duty of care extends to pupils and visitors.
- Two trained people on a large site means no cover during holidays, trips and sickness.
- Emergency first aid for schools runs one day, about six hours, up to 12 delegates, three-year certificate.
- Blended delivery is an option: online theory in advance, practical at your school.
- Paediatric content is included at no extra cost, and first aid courses are accredited by FAIB.

Aim2Aid keeps its trainers in-house rather than outsourcing them, with Rebecca Sullivan leading the team and over 50 years of combined experience behind them. Whether you need emergency first aid for schools or [emergency first aid for schools in Milton Keynes](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/emergency-first-aid-for-schools-milton-keynes/), we cover the whole area.

Call 07771 680794 to talk through how many first aiders your school actually needs.

## Do schools need first aiders?

Yes. A school is a workplace, so it must have enough trained first aiders for its staff, and the duty of care it owes to pupils means that cover in practice has to stretch far beyond the staffroom. Every school needs trained people on site, named, current and available.

## The legal duty behind school first aid cover

Health and safety law treats a school like any other employer. You are required to assess your first aid needs and provide enough trained people and equipment to match what that assessment finds. The [Health and Safety Executive](https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/l74.htm) (HSE) sets out that the assessment, not a fixed headcount, decides what adequate looks like.

That assessment is where most schools discover the real number. You are not sizing cover for a quiet office. You are sizing it for a site with hundreds of children, split levels, playgrounds, a sports hall, science labs, a kitchen, off-site trips and staggered break times. Add the fact that first aiders take holidays, go on courses, run trips and go off sick, and a school that trains two people has effectively trained nobody for a fair chunk of the year.

Regulations cover employees. Pupils are covered by the school's wider duty of care, which is why an inspection or an insurance review will not accept "we meet the minimum for staff" as an answer. If a child collapses in the corridor, nobody asks whether that child was on the payroll.

Whether you need emergency first aid for schools or [emergency first aid for schools services Reading](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/emergency-first-aid-for-schools-reading/), we cover the whole area, and the starting point is always the same: how many trained people does your site genuinely need to be covered on a normal Tuesday, not on paper.

## What school staff actually deal with on site

The incidents that fill a school accident book are not exotic. Bumped heads, playground fractures, nosebleeds, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, seizures, fainting, choking at lunchtime, scalds in food tech, sports injuries and the occasional collapse in assembly. Training has to be aimed at those, delivered to people who will be holding a class of thirty at the same time.

- **Unresponsive casualties:** recovery position, airway management and CPR on a child or an adult.
- **Choking:** the difference between a mild and a severe obstruction, and what to do with each.
- **Bleeding and shock:** direct pressure, dressings and recognising deterioration.
- **Breathing difficulty:** asthma, anaphylaxis awareness and when to escalate immediately.
- **Bumps, breaks and burns:** the day to day reality of a busy playground.

Aim2Aid trainers are in-house, never outsourced, with Rebecca Sullivan leading them, and between them they hold over 50 years of combined experience. That matters because a school course should not be a generic workplace course with the word "children" mentioned twice. Whether you need emergency first aid for schools or [emergency first aid for schools services Windsor](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/resources/emergency-first-aid-for-schools-windsor/), we cover the whole area, and the scenarios are pitched at the site your staff work on.

## How the training is delivered in your school

Courses run at your premises, on your dates, which is the only sensible way to train a school. Your staff do not travel, your cover costs stay down, and the practical work happens in the space where an incident would actually happen. Our [emergency first aid for schools](https://www.aim2aid.co.uk/first-aid-training/emergency-first-aid-for-schools/) course covers one day, about six hours, for up to 12 delegates, and the certificate runs for three years.

Blended delivery is available as an option: the theory is completed online in advance, the practical is done at your school. Same one day structure, about six hours, up to 12 delegates and the same three-year certificate, just with the classroom time reshaped. It suits schools that would rather use an INSET afternoon than a whole day.

Two points worth knowing. The paediatric element is included in the emergency first aid at work training at no extra cost, so a primary or an early years setting is not paying twice for the age range it actually works with. And our first aid courses are accredited by FAIB, while the mental health courses are accredited by FAA, which keeps the paperwork clean when a governor or an inspector asks who awarded the certificate.

If you are looking for a school first aid trainer close to home, our trainers work across Berkshire and surrounding areas, so getting a date in the diary rarely means waiting weeks.

## Keeping cover valid, recorded and spread across the site

Certificates last three years. Skills do not. A first aider who has not touched a manikin since 2022 will hesitate, and hesitation is the thing that costs. Annual refresher practice is recommended, and it is cheap insurance against a bad afternoon.

Practical housekeeping that keeps a school genuinely covered:

- Name your first aiders on notices staff and visitors can see, and keep the list current when people leave.
- Spread trained staff across buildings, key stages and the site, not all in one office.
- Train site staff, kitchen staff, office staff and sports staff, not only teachers.
- Diarise expiry dates a term ahead so nobody drops out of date over the summer.
- Check your kits and any defibrillator on a fixed cycle and record it.
- Include trips, clubs and after-school provision in your needs assessment.

Aim2Aid Ltd is a Windsor based training company, company number 16319053, and Rebecca will tell you straight what your site needs rather than selling you a bigger course than the job requires. If you want to see how schools rate the training, the reviews on the site do that job better than we can.
